Biography of Stephen King:
Stephen King was born in 1947 in Portland, Maine. He publishes his first novel, Carrie, in 1974. His publisher then contracts him for five more novels. When he starts to receive the royalties for his novel, King quits his job as a teacher to dedicate himself full-time to writing. After his mother’s death, he moves to Colorado with his family and starts writing The Shining. In 1977, it ends up being his third novel published, after Salem, published in 1975. The book ends up being a best-seller, and is still considered to this day one of King’s best works. After this, all of his novels end up reaching the best-seller list, apart from those he wrote under a pseudonym or in limited edition. Still in 1977, King moves to England briefly where he meets Peter Straub, with whom he will eventually do two collaborations with. Dealing with alcohol problems, along with cocaine and medical addiction, he enters into a detox in the late 80’s. He has a wife, Tabitha, and three kids, Naomi, Joe and Owen. In 2015, he receives the National Medal of Arts, the highest distinction given by the American Government to artists. To this day, he has written over 35 books, many of which have been adapted to cinema and television. As well, he has written articles, essays, and short stories among other media works. |
The Shining, a Stephen King novel, is a book that surrounds a family of three, Jack Torrance, the father, Wendy Torrance, the mother, and Danny Torrance, the son. Jack Torrance is given an opportunity to work as a caretaker of a hotel called the Overlook for a whole winter. Jackand his family must stay, by themselves, to run the hotel. They must overcome the manifestations and disturbances that seem to reappear and haunt the family. Jack Torrance seems to be the character who is the most influenced by the Overlook's malice. Wendy and Danny must overcome the Overlook's past and Jack in order to survive.
